Application:Guanidine isothiocyanate can be used as a chaotropic agent and strong denaturant in the biochemical field. During nucleic acid extraction, it rapidly disrupts cells or viruses, inhibits RNase activity, prevents RNA degradation, and facilitates the separation of nucleic acids from proteins. Guanidine isothiocyanate is also used in the synthesis of pharmaceutical intermediates and for degreasing in the oil and fat industry; in daily chemicals, it serves as a powerful lipid-degrading agent.

Guanidine thiocyanate is a strong protein denaturant and potent inhibitor of nucleases. Guanidinium thiocyanate is a nucleic acid protector in the extraction of DNA and RNA from cells. Guanidine thiocyanate is a common component of buffers used for nucleic acid extraction.
